Project Overview

Revise and upgrade plant wide control logic and operator interfaces to maximise processor idle time, to rationalise plant alarm system and to provide efficient operator interface facilities.

MIPAC Scope

• Decipher existing software coding
• Re-code in standard, efficient format without changing plant control strategy
• Re-build operator displays for efficient operation and alarm handling
• Train HBI personnel with new system
• Commission during plant shutdowns

Technical Highlights

• Yokogawa Centum CS Control System including 18 operator screens in a central control room and 34 field control stations (FCS) across the plant.
• Brownfields project requiring reverse engineering of existing control logic and recoding of system, one box at a time, without changing plant control logic
• Extensive co-ordination with site engineers and operators to re-code, test, install on limited shutdown, test and commission
• Original issues included plant alarms occurring at over 2000 events per day with processors operating at up to 180% of capacity
• Long term project terminated after two and a half years when BHPB decided to close the plant
