Project Overview:

MIPAC’s Process Control Engineering experts were engaged to manage the design, configuration and commissioning of the control system for Sterlite Industries’ two new Greenfield plants in India. The Tuticorin plant is a copper smelting complex including Oxygen and Acid plants through to production of copper anodes. The Silvassa plant is a copper refinery complex built to produce cathode copper.

MIPAC Scope:

• Control system and instrumentation engineering
• Control system design and configuration
• Commissioning assistance

Technical Highlights:

• Yokogawa uXL
• ISASMELT Furnace, Feed Preparation and Off Gas Handling Controls
• Anode Furnace Controls
• Acid Plant Controls
• Utilities Controls
• Refinery Controls including Cell Voltage Monitoring System

Results:

Sterlite now boasts:
• Plants that are fully stabilised and operating above rated capacity
• The first Copper Smelter in the world to be accredited with “Five Star” rating by British Safety Council.

Sterlite was so satisfied with MIPAC’s involvement in the two Greenfield plants, that MIPAC was again selected in 2004 for a major capacity upgrade. In this upgrade, MIPAC assisted Sterlite to increase capacity to 300 000 tonnes per annum.

WHAT OUR CUSTOMERS SAY

"On the Ilo Smelter Modernization Project the MIPAC crew came to Peru and got right into the thick of things right away. Starting-up copper smelters is hazardous, noisy, and dirty work, but these guys consistently demonstrated a cheerful, "can-do” attitude and got it done - individually and as a team." ~ John Rapkoch, Fluor Commissioning Manager for the SPCC Project
