Process control improvements should be based on analytical evidence

Mipac will be presenting a paper about how to prioritise process control improvements at the 12th AusIMM Mill Operators’ Conference 2014 to be held in September in Townsville, Queensland, Australia.

The paper, to be delivered by Mipac Business Development Manager Darren Hill, will emphasise the importance of decision making based on facts rather than simply relying on vendors to provide ‘hopeful’ black box solutions which might initially appear to be an obvious quick fix.

“Mipac’s message is that before looking to implement ‘one size fits all’ black box or APC solutions, a client must first review, analyse and validate the data they have at site,” Darren says.

“As part analysing their control system and data, clients will be presented with accurate and reliable evidence on which to base changes. A client may not be aware of the level of influence that  simple instrumentation repairs or calibrations,  control loop tuning or operator training may have on the operational performance of the process.

“Mipac believes in evidence-based decision making, that clients should better understand their process control systems before spending money on solutions that may not actually address perceived problems.”

Darren says that many clients benefit from initially tweaking their processes to make the most of the plant and systems they already have before spending significant dollars.
