Mipac’s popular short-circuit detection monitor, ShortMeter™, is helping tankhouses around the globe improve their current efficiencies

Mipac’s short-circuit and dead plate detection monitor, ShortMeter™, is used by several electrowinning and refining operations around the globe since 2009.

The device has recently received a functionality upgrade, making it a dual range sensing, and thus eliminating the need for two separate models to suit tankhouses based on their respective electric currents

ShortMeter™ is a simple to use, low-cost, low-maintenance, ergonomically designed device that indicates short circuits between electrode plates in a tankhouse refining environment. It uses the Hall Effect principle to identify increased magnetic field strengths due to  increased current passing though the hanger bar when a short circuit develops  between tankhouse cell electrode plates.

“Earlier we had two separate models, measuring 0 – 100 Gauss and 0 – 500 Gauss respectively, and this was done to address the different currents that exist at electro-refining versus electro-winning plants”, says Tony Mathison, Mipac Products and Services Manager.

“In conversation with our clients, we realised that the need to determine the device range prior to use should be taken out the equation, and this was the main driver for the design upgrade. The new version ShortMeter™ houses two transducers that cover the required sensing ranges. Operators can set it in auto mode and the device will automatically switch to the most appropriate transducer based on the live measurements made.”

The simplistic design of the ShortMeter™ implements a smart circuit to drive an LED display array, making it easy to identify current fluctuations in cells.

“Irrespective of where our clients’ tankhouse operations are based, be it Finland, Africa, Philippines or here in Australia, we see a lot more emphasis on process optimisation and operational improvements – the ShortMeter™ is a simple, repeatable and effective contributor to this drive” states Tony.

Feedback from our existing users indicate that they would recommend MIPAC ShortMeter™ to others, their comments include:

“The ShortMeter™ is still the preferred and efficient way of shorts correction over Infrared cameras. This helps us to have a high current efficiency rating, and also to determine if the there is good deposition of copper in our cathode (e.g. poor contact inspection and correction)” – Shift Manager, Glencore PASAR; Philippines.

“We have a dedicated crew for tankhouse maintenance on 24 hr basis as we have some issues in the cell top furniture that effect our current efficiency. These instruments are very handy in checking the shorts… light weight and easy to use” – Chief Metallurgist, MMG Kinsevere; Democratic Republic of Congo.

“…clear visual determination of a weak/strong short…. in addition the ShortMeter™ can easily be calibrated by the user if we adjust our current in the tankhouse…” Tankhouse Supervisor, Boliden Harjavalta; Finland.

Mipac’s ShortMeter™, Mineral Concentration Monitor, CellView® and Tankhouse automation solutions are helping tankhouses around the world achieve their operational targets. For more information on these solutions contact Mipac.
